In Order to Live by Yeonmi Park | Book Review

“I inhaled books like other people breathe oxygen. I didn't just read for knowledge or pleasure, I read to live.”

In Order to Live is a memoir that recounts the author's escape from North Korea and her journey to freedom. This book is a harrowing account of the atrocities that Park witnessed and experienced, including hunger, violence, and sexual assault.

Park does not shy away from detailing the brutal realities of life in North Korea. Her story is both heartbreaking and inspiring, as she demonstrates incredible resilience and courage in the face of unimaginable adversity.

This book also addresses the themes of freedom and human rights. Park's journey to freedom is a testament to the power of hope, and her story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of fighting for justice and equality.

The author's writing is simple and straightforward. To hear directly from someone who has lived in the terrible conditions of hunger, poverty and sexual assault was truly eyeopening.

Overall, I found this memoir to be an unforgettable glimpse into the author's fight for freedom. I learned a lot about North Korea and the human trafficking industry in China at the time.

I read this book as part of my Read The World Challenge for North Korea.
