Assembly by Natasha Brown- Mini Book Review.

Why endure my own dehumanization?

In this novella, the main character is a black British woman who speaks about the racism she observes and has to deal with in her everyday life, both socially and at work.

I found the writing to be very decisive and the messages in this book were powerful. There were bits of perfectly formed sentences that I found very clever. For example:

"Be the best. Work harder, work smarter. Exceed every expectation. But also, be invisible, imperceptible. Don’t make anyone uncomfortable. Don’t inconvenience. Exist in the negative only, the space around. Do not insert yourself into the main narrative. Go unnoticed. Become the air."

What I didn't like about the writing style was that it made me feel very disconnected from the main character. I think the author intended for her to be detached from the readers, but for a stream of consciousness narrative like this I thought I would have connected more with the narrator than I did.

Her writing reminds me of Rachel Cusk in a way, and I've loved what I've read from Cusk so far, so I'm interested to see what Brown comes out with next.
